Jamaica 2022
My first time out of the country was when I studied abroad over spring break in Jamaica. The focus of this trip was to learn about the human and environment interactions in the country. We stopped at multiple locations while traveling around the island. This was my first time snorkeling and was the spark that led me to want to go deeper underwater.
Impacts of Climate Change on Water Availability in the Caribbean
I chose to write about how climate change will impact water availability in the Caribbean for my final project after we learned about the use of groundwater in Jamaica and the threat sea level rise has on it. I wanted to learn about other threats to water availability and potential solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change on drinking water. Understanding this topic is vital to people’s lives as water becomes more scarce and it required critical thinking to read through solutions to water scarcity and understand how practical they are to implement. This also requires active listening to cross-cultural voices and understanding that solutions that work in one place may not work somewhere else. It can be easy to assume that we know what’s best, but this paper helped me understand that solutions we may implement in the United States might not work in the Caribbean or even across every island in the Caribbean.

Bonaire 2023
In spring 2023, I not only went on my second trip out of the country, but also was able to achieve a lifelong dream of mine to become scuba certified. I was able to view coral reefs up close for the first time ever and practice some underwater photography, which taught me better buoyancy to capture the best possible photos. This experience was truly eye opening and unlocked a new passion for me to explore for the rest of my life. I plan to pursue a career where I can combine my love for scuba diving with ocean conservation.

I earned my Advanced Open Water Diver Certification shortly after returning from Bonaire and can’t wait for more opportunities to dive.
